Artist Mark Templer

PAPER NAUTILUS

MARK TEMPLER

Have you ever wanted to climb out of the aeroplane window and touch the clouds?

Mark Templer makes time-lapse films of the dynamic scenes around us that we often overlook. By capturing them and altering their timebase, the intricacies and development of form are revealed.

In this installation (Soar 1) he uses time-lapse movies of cloud formations as they gather and soar. These are projected through mesh screens in a darkened space to create an environment that gives the viewer a multi-dimensional experience of walking among the clouds. He adds a spiritual element to the piece through the use of 12th century choral music... as the angelic voices soar, the clouds build, creating an atmosphere that transports the viewer to a place where they can feel connected to the natural world.

ALICE WILSON

It is the balance between what is real and what is perceived to be real, and also the use of nature as a representation of an ideological reality that are key to my practice. With particular interest directed towards the lens, I am considering how our experience of the landscape is understood and attempting to assess the many differing ways in which technology plays a role. I am interested in whether or not we are more inclined to accept a photograph as a genuine depiction of reality, and the way in which painting and photography has informed what we think of as landscape.

A view  through Alice's work

From the late 18th century, Romanticism reacted against the rational thought of the Enlightenment and tried to negate prescriptive qualities of science. It explored the emotions that could be caused by the contemplation of the world and often that of nature, the philosopher Immanuel Kant drew attention to emotions such as terror and awe as being triggers of the Sublime. Through my work I attempt to asses these histories relevance in a contemporary context, and ask where it is we might find a modern day comparison.

SASHA BOWLES
Sasha is exploring the ways that memories can ebb and flow

from one thing to another. Starting from a found souvenir, an

anonymous memory, she plays with it until a new form evolves.

Though subtle and large changes the souviner morphs into new

memory and meaning. Using the object in the manner of a

Japanese Scholar stone,  contemplating and evoking memories

real and imagined. Memories can be called up deliberately or

rise up involuntarily from a trigger. Memory that is

re-remembered gives us a new memory in a new context. Each

re-visitation givesemory, a layering of memory and

interpretation.

Artist Matt Gee

PAPER NAUTILUS
MATT GEE

Matt’s work involves covering, melting, placing, arranging of spaces and objects.
There is a concern with the authenticity of materiality, the source of materials, jostling with the modern materialistic demands of human sensory decadent desire, a society that ecpects, and ‘I want it now’ culture.
His main interest is in questioning the source of materials, whether they are man made or naturally occurring. Gee takes this dichotomy of the synthetic versus the authentic and applys it to his art practice through methods of imitation, replication and manipulation and elevates it through methods of display. The result can be repulsive or seductive to the viewer.

MATTHEW LUCK GALPIN

My aim is to find the meaning and value of things in a world often misunderstanding making. It is clear to me that the distance between the back glance of knowledge and the true, ever still, place of becoming is as great as it is invisible . At the start of all traces of the manifest is the problem of immanence. Therefore a true sense of doubt is first and foremost to understanding the possible.

RALPH ANDERSON
Ralph's work aims to explore the
possibilities of space, light, movement and
perception within the realms of modern
painting. Wanting to delve into the
materiality of the painted surface whilst
keeping the transcendentalnature of the image
true and strong, he hopes to produce artworks
that reflect society’s hopes and fears in a
world that is inspired by, yet, evermore
reliant on science and technology.

PAPER NAUTILUS
 KATY LYNTON

Katy is interested in the relationship of forms (and mark making) and questioning whether they are emotional, spiritual or physical; which one is dominant and how something can become manifest when two or three entities are put together. The forms sometimes appear to be almost sparring within the space, which in turn keeps a keen sense of awareness for the viewer, so the works are always active and full of energy.

Artist Fiona Long

PAPER NAUTILUS
FIONA LONG
Long’s “Concrete Poetry” series is an exploration of how it feels to live in the city. These chaotic images investigate the fast-paced lives we lead both visually and almost viscerally. An archaeological approach to painting shows the contrasts of the impact that both people and nature have on the manmade structures we are surrounded by. The Eastern aesthetic of the beauty of transience is contemplated to interpret the ever-changing urban landscape. A fascination with material is coupled with areas of representation using personal street photography and collages from free London newspapers as source material.

I am interested in the stories that objects tell about the lives and values of people. My fascination with crocheted doilies springs from this. Their patterns have a symmetry which seems to suggest order and that everything is just right. Is this view a little sugar coated?

ALEX MARCH
My research and studio practice reflects an ongoing investigation of the domestic archive as everyday portrait and place for identification and the formation of identity, and explores in particular the image/object relationship of the family photograph.
The exploration of the family photographic archive elevates the humble yet treasured origins of family history ephemera to status of artwork. Through their exploration the audience is able to both identify with the archetype: for everyone has seen, or owns pictures like these; and empathise with the clichéd impulse to relive remembered moments; but also to embrace notions of identity as formed by experience.

My work seeks to explore identity, myth and
symbolism, with a focus on folktales and
stories, paying particular attention to the
way in which these narratives have been
imaged and the effect this has on the
construct of the ‘feminine’.

By appropriating and referencing mainstream
popular imagery and already established signs

examine, subvert and re-image cultural icons

KITTY STIRLING

Much of Kitty’s subject matter is enigmatic, operating on a border between figuration and abstraction. References to the real world can be found in her smaller works, which begin in the form of drawings, opening up ideas as she works with mixed media, oil and collage. The process of applying layers of paint allows the potential image to construct its own narrative, becoming mysterious and abstract, resurfacing transformed. Dominant subjects of recent years include the series ‘Allotment’, a place Kitty returns to draw finding it a source of unkempt simplicity and human endeavour.

PAPER NAUTILUS

Paper Nautilus was a great success.

A huge thank-you to everyone who took part and for all the wonderful people who came. The positive energy of the place was palpable. It was a joyous expression to collaboration, between the artists and the houses. An inspirational week of creativity.
